Albertans have spoken and the province is headed to a referendum on independence
Stay Free Alberta today announced that its province-wide independence petition has reached its signature target: A milestone that now compels the Government of Alberta to proceed toward a referendum on independence. This achievement, secured entirely through the volunteerism and personal conviction of thousands of Albertans, may represent the most significant citizen-led democratic initiative this country has ever seen.
“This is a historic moment for Alberta that was earned, not given,” said Mitch Sylvestre, Proponent of Citizen Initiative Petition C-25-1401. “This result is the direct consequence of thousands of Albertans who decided that they are sick and tired of the status quo and that it is time to stand up for the future of their families and communities. Direct democracy needs to make a comeback in this world, and today it is starting right here in Alberta.”
Stay Free Alberta’s operation is powered by an extensive grassroots infrastructure, representing a logistical undertaking of extraordinary scope. Petition signing operations and supporter engagement will continue until the petition collection deadline, which may be prematurely halted by First Nations groups urgently attempting to halt signature collection. Regardless of the outcome of the April 7th Court hearing, once the petition campaign concludes, the process advances into its next phase: Preparing the way for a successful Independence Referendum in the fall of 2026.
